CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR
3-YEAR DOCTORAL TRAINING
IN INSECT SCIENCES
(2007)
DISSERTATION RESEARCH INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME (DRIP)
The Human Health Division of the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe) is
looking for a PhD student to work on malaria vectors in a dry and rural ecosystem in Kenya.
The goal of the project is to determine the ecology of malaria vectors in semi-arid ecosystems as a
model for understanding their population dynamics and malaria transmission in these areas. The PhD
student will evaluate the spatial and temporal variation of adult Anopheles abundance and composition
in the semiarid sites; assess the temporal variation in biting rates and feeding preference of Anopheles
species and intra and inter-season variations in transmission risk attributable to specific Anopheles
species. The candidate will also investigate the diversity and variation in larval habitat productivity and
temporal estimates of habitat colonization by Anopheles species as a function of rainfall in the semiarid
site. The student will further investigate the physiological adaptations and reproductive behavior of
malaria vector species during extended periods of dry weather.
Qualifications:
The candidate is scheduled to start the research work in October 2007. Knowledge of vector control
and malaria transmission is required. Previous research experience on a malaria related topic at MSc
level is a prerequisite. A Bachelor of Science with minimum of Upper 2nd class and a Master of Science
degree or equivalent is required.
The student must be ready to live and work in Baringo district, Kenya. Support under this program
includes a modest monthly stipend, tuition and research costs for 36 months, to enable the qualified
student to complete their PhD thesis.
Application criteria:
Applicants should submit copies of:
1. Letter of registration at a recognized university,
2. Certified copies of university degree certificates and transcripts,
3. At least two (2) letters of recommendation from persons who can be able to attest to the
applicant’s work and study habit, and
4. An updated curriculum vitae.
Application letters and supporting documents should be submitted to:
By e-mail: arppis2007@icipe.org
By post/courier: The Network Coordinator, ARPPIS
