MRes Translational Medicine Studentship

MRes Translational Medicine

School of Translational Medicine
Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences

AstraZeneca - CRUK Studentships

The MRes in Translational Medicine is inviting applications for eight fully-funded studentships covering UK/EU tuition and entry onto this pioneering new Masters course. Funded through Cancer Research UK and AstraZeneca the awards reflect the exciting nature of this new 'research-intense' Masters and are available for 2007/08 entry.

Based in the recently launched Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre, the aim of the MRes is to train high calibre bioscientists in the fundamental skills required to enhance translational medicine, or 'bench to bedside' research. The research training will equip students with the knowledge to spearhead and fast-track future clinical therapies from molecular and cellular discoveries - to the immediate benefit of the patient.

Delivered through a combination of modular units and practical research placements, the MRes offers two distinct pathways:

* Option A: Interdisciplinary Molecular Medicine
* Option B: Pharmaceutical Cancer Translational Medicine

The first pathway provides intense training in the 'omics' skills such as genomics, proteomics and metabolomics whilst the second focuses on the delivery of clinical strategies for new cancer drugs. In each case the objective is to develop practical and intellectual skills to unravel significant laboratory findings into new and dynamic applied research.

The course is research driven, with candidates undertaking two separate projects over a total of 35 weeks in collaboration with academics and industrialists at the forefront of the biomedical and pharmaceutical sciences.

It is anticipated that graduates from the MRes will progress onto PhD study or leading industrial positions.

The minimum entry requirement is an upper second class honours degree in the biomedical sciences. Limited places remain available for 2007/08 entry.
