Ph D Walsh Fellowship on Nitrate Loss to Water

Project title: Nitrate loss to water from grassland
Supervisors: Dr. Catherine Watson, Agri-Food and Bioscience Institute, Northern Ireland (AFBINI), Dr. Roy Browne, Queen's University Belfast (QUB) and Dr. Hubert Tunney, Teagasc, Johnstown Castle Research Centre, Wexford
Project aim: The aim is to study nitrogen losses to water from grassland and will complement other ongoing studies.
Background: Agriculture contributes nitrate to surface and ground waters. The project will study the effect two stocking rate treatments on groundwater nitrate and other nutrient levels, at Teagasc, Johnstown Castle. Groundwater monitoring wells will be installed and nutrient levels in water samples collected will be compared with nutrients in the top metre of soil using suction cups and soil samples.
Requirements: M. Sc. or at least a 2.1 Bachelor degree in environmental sciences, physical geography, biology, hydrogeology, hydrology, agriculture or related discipline.
The applicant will register for a PhD at Queen's University Belfast, and experimental work will be undertaken at Teagasc, Johnstown Castle, Co. Wexford, Ireland. The applicant should have a good working knowledge of English.
Scholarship: The Teagasc Walsh Fellowship provides €21,000 per annum for three years from which university fees are paid, currently €4,800 per year for EU nationals
