Centre Land:
Germany
Position: PhD Position eingegangen
am:20/08/2007

Beschreibung:
University of Freiburg, Germany

Doctoral or Postdoctoral Position (Biomechanics)
available for the development of smart orthodontic brackets („braces“) with
integrated force-moment sensors for therapeutic correction of irregular tooth
position with objective feedback. The position is available from September 2007
on.
Project:
Through a collaboration between the Department of Orthodontics and the
Department of Microsystems Engineering (University of Freiburg, Germany), we
currently develop smart orthodontic brackets with an integrated, autonomic
sensor system fabricated using CMOS-technology. Brackets or “braces” are
adhesively attached to the teeth for correcting irregularly positioned teeth.
Our goal is to realise an intelligent orthodontic appliance providing object
feedback on the force-moment systems therapeutically applied to the teeth.
Intelligent bracket technology offers attractive prospects for clinical research
and for improved orthodontic therapies. The project is funded by the Deutsche
Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) for at least 3 years.
Tasks:

Finite-element (FE) simulations of biomechanical systems
(tooth-bracket-models) for optimising the sensor system and for biomechanical
research in orthodontics
Test and mechanical characterisation of the sensor system embedded in the
bracket
In-vitro application of smart brackets in fundamental biomechanical research
Participation in the development of a concept for selection, handling and
imaging of measurement data for later clinical application of smart brackets in
orthodontic patients
Linking the technical groups (microsystems and microelectronic engineering)
with the clinical (dental/orthodontic) research group participating in this
innovative project
Your Profile:

University degree (diploma or master) in physics, mathematics or engineering
with or without doctoral degree
Fundamental knowledge in engineering mechanics (experience in biomechanics
desirable)
Experience in FE-Simulation (e.g. using Ansys, Comsol Multiphysics / FEMLAB)
and in software programming (preferably with Matlab, LabView, C++) desirable
We offer:

Full position for at least 3 years (salary approx. 3000 € per month / TV-L
E13)
Perspective for longer employment
Independent and responsible position in an inter-disciplinary research group
National and international contacts to other biomechanical research groups
Possibility for obtaining a doctoral (Ph.D) degree
Candidates interested in this innovative research project should
send a CV with cover letter per e-mail to:

Applicants are invited to e-mail/facsimile/mail their curriculum vitae, a
2-page outline of their research proposal in English (this may be
accompanied by a longer statement in a Southeast Asian language) to the
address below by 15 November 2007. Arrangements should also be made by
which at least two letters of reference, one of which is from your principal
supervisor, are sent confidentially to the same address by the same
deadline.

The 2-page research proposal must include the following details:
