PhD fellow in the fields of Medical biology, Biology or Medicine Pediatric

PhD fellow in the fields of Medical biology, Biology or Medicine Pediatric
Oncology and Pediatric Gastroenterology (Groningen), 38 hours per week

Job description
------------------------------
Towards better nutritional support for chemotherapy-induced intestinal
damage in children with cancer.
The long term cancer-free survival of pediatric cancer patients has
significantly increased during the past decades due to more intensive
chemotherapy treatment regimens. However, more intensive treatment has also
resulted in serious morbidity and even mortality. One of the side-effects is
mucosal damage (i.e. mucositis) in the gastro-intestinal tract, thereby
loosing the epithelium necessary for the normal functions of the GI-tract,
like the barrier function for bacteria and digestion and absorption of food.
In this research proposal we will study the digestion and absorption of
carbohydrates, fatty acids and amino acids using a mouse model of
chemotherapy induced gastro-intestinal mucositis using nutrients labelled
with stable-isotope tracers. Using the mouse model, further knowledge will
be gained about the pathofysiology of mucositis and new prophylactic
interventions can be studied.

The results of the studies will be used by dietitians to develop optimal
feeding protocols for pediatric oncology patients with two objectives: 1 –
to supply the GI epithelium with as much nutrients as possible, thereby
promoting recovery. 2- to feed the patients most efficiently, resulting in
the best available feeding status of the patient, related to decreased
infections, more rapid recovery and, most importantly, increased survival.

The data will be published in scientific journals. After 4 years a thesis
must be written and a PhD degree should be obtained.

Liverpool John Moores University MPhil/PhD Studentship – up to 3 years
Communicable
Disease Morbidity and Mortality among Problematic Drug Users

The studentship covers university fees at the UK/EU level and a stipend of
£12,600 per annum

*Please quote Ref: B7345AC*

The Centre for Public Health, Liverpool John Moores University invites
applications for an MPhil/PhD studentship to conduct a programme of research
focussing on communicable diseases affecting problematic drug users.

Drug users are particularly vulnerable to a range of blood borne infections
including hepatitis B, C and HIV, due to injecting with non-sterile
equipment and risky injecting behaviour. Hepatitis C is currently the most
significant infectious disease affecting those who inject drugs, with
concern nationally regarding the rising number of infections in the UK as a
whole. Research has also identified the implicative role of infections in
deaths of drug users from localised and systemic bacterial infections and
illnesses associated with viral infections, however infection-related deaths
are largely ignored in official statistics relating to drug-related deaths.

The student will be expected to develop a research programme focussing on
communicable diseases affecting problematic drug users, to inform knowledge
and understanding of the true burden and cost of drug-related mortality and
blood borne viruses. The research will be highly quantitative and require
extensive application of multivariate statistical techniques. The student
will be expected to have experience in handling large datasets and data
manipulation and a statistical background would be advantageous. People with
basic statistical abilities who wish to develop these in a public health
setting are encouraged to apply, in addition to those with research
experience in a health-related field. Applicants must demonstrate research
or statistical experience in their application.

Applicants should have a minimum of a 2:1 honours degree and a relevant
Masters degree would be an advantage (professional research experience would
also be considered). The student will join active teams of researchers in
the fields of substance use epidemiology and drug use prevention. The work
programme will be supported by academics and professionals with specialist
expertise and networks, in addition to the support and development
opportunities provided by the University Research and Graduate School and
the Faculty of Health and Applied Social Sciences.

The studentship covers university fees at the UK/EU level and a stipend of
£12,600 per annum for full-time study for up to three years. The student
will register initially for the award of MPhil and will be expected to
transfer to PhD registration within 12-15 months (subject to satisfactory
progress and approval of the transfer report).

For an informal discussion, contact the Director of Studies for the research
programme, Dr Caryl Beynon (email: c.m.beynon@...). To apply, please
complete the application form for postgraduate study, and send with your CV
(optional) and a cover letter explaining your interests and skills relating
to this opportunity to Dr Diana Leighton, Castle House, North Street,
Liverpool, L3 2AY (d.j.leighton@...; 0151 231 4551). Application
forms are available from the following website:

A PhD studentship in mathematical ecology is available within the
Biodiversity Research Group at University College Cork, Ireland.

*Predicting the dynamical consequences of biodiversity change in complex
systems.*

This project will explore the dynamic consequences of species loss from
large complex food webs. Food webs can be viewed as complex systems of
interacting species and have a number of network properties that can be
explored from a mathematical perspective. The aim of the project will be to
use mathematical and computational approaches to investigate the importance
of species in a food web context. The project will use documented patterns
of body size, abundance and food web structure to parameterise models of a
series of marine food webs with a special focus on Lough Hyne, south west
Ireland. We are also interested in dynamics of food webs in general. We are
currently recruiting for a Ph.D in theoretical ecology (Applied Mathematics)
to work on the project. The prospective candidate should have a background
in mathematics. The applicant should be open to multidisciplinary research
and have a full and clean drivers licence. The scholarship will be in the

PhD Studentship Division of Surgery & Oncology

*Identifying potential therapeutic targets in non-melanoma skin cancer - a
devastating complication of the genetic skin disease dystrophic
epidermolysis bullosa (DEB)*

Certain genetic skin diseases predispose to developing non melanoma skin
cancer. Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB) is a devastating
genetic skin disease characterised by chronic erosions and blistering of the
skin. Not only do patients suffer from continual trauma induced skin
fragility, but are at a huge increased risk of developing Squamous cell
carcinoma (SCC). Unlike spontaneously arising SCC in the general population,
RDEB SCC are highly aggressive and prone to metastasis, with 55% of all
patients dying before the age of 40 years from this complication.

A three-year PhD studentship funded by DEBRA is available immediately to
join Dr Andrew South and the EB team at Dundee University, who have been
working towards genetic characterisation of RDEB SCC. Using a combination of
Affymetrix 10K genomic SNP mapping arrays and Illumina sentrix bead
expression arrays, genetic changes have been identified that are specific to
SCC development in both RDEB and non-RDEB individuals. This project will
follow up a number of candidate genetic loci identified in our initial
screens, as well as offering the opportunity to be involved in extending the
SNP genomic mapping using higher density 330K arrays and a larger sample set
with a view to identifying pathways and targets important in the development
of metastatic SCC.

Applications are invited from well-motivated candidates with at least an
upper second class honours degree in a relevant discipline. Candidates with
Masters degrees are also encouraged to apply. An ability to demonstrate
practical skills in cell or molecular biology would be an advantage. The
successful candidate will work in modern laboratories within the Division of
Surgery & Oncology, which is part of the School of Medicine, based at
Ninewells Hospital, Dundee. For an informal discussion, please contact the
lead project supervisor Dr Andrew South, tel: 01382 496432; email:
a.p.south@....

The studentship pays tuition fees at UK/EU rate plus a maintenance stipend
of £12,600 per annum. Non-EU applicants will have to fund the difference
between home and oversees tuition fees themselves, approximately £8000 per
annum for 3 years.

PhD Scholarship Structural Modelling of Wind Turbine Blades

PhD Scholarship
Structural Modelling of Wind Turbine Blades
Department of Mechanical Engineering
http://www.jobs.ac.uk/jobs/QK491/PhD_Scholarship/

1 PhD scholarship is available at the Department of Mechanical Engineering as soon as possible.

Do you want to start a global career with a challenging job that makes a real difference? Do you want to develop innovative tools for future design of intelligent wind turbine blades?

The project
This project is motivated by the vision of being able to provide passive control of the dynamic behavior of wind turbine blades by utilizing the anisotropic properties of composite materials in an intelligent manner. To obtain this vision, one of the main building blocks needed is a general, fully coupled and validated beam element. Also needed are effective and exact methods for determination of stiffness and mass coefficients for such a beam element based on 3D geometry and material data for the blade. The purpose of this Ph.D. project is to develop such a fully coupled beam element.

The fully coupled beam element can be used in aeroelastic calculations to design the structure in order to reduce loading on the blade. Modern pitch-regulating wind turbines use control systems to reduce the blade loads. However, these systems are too slow to react to sudden wind changes. There is therefore high interest in building active or passive control systems into the blades to reduce especially fatigue loads. Passive systems are much more robust with respect to operation interruptions and it is desirable to use the anisotropic material properties for composites to optimize the load reduction behavior of the blades.
The Ph.D. project is part of a larger project supported by the Danish Energy Research Programme (EFP). The Ph.D. project is also partly supported by Vestas Wind Systems A/S, one of the worlds leading wind turbine companies.

Qualifications and work experience
The candidate should have a master degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master’s degree in engineering.

The candidate is expected to have a strong background in:

Analytical modeling
Mechanical problems especially involving beams
The theory behind the finite element method
Fiber reinforced composite materials
It is an advantage if the candidate has some experience with:

Wind turbine design
Aeroelastic codes
What we offer
We offer an exciting and challenging job in an international environment with good possibilities for professional and personal development. The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is a leading technical university in northern Europe and benchmarks with the best universities in the world. Risø National Laboratory has recently been incorporated into DTU, forming a world leading environment in wind energy and disciplines associated with wind turbines. The successful candidate will become member of an environment with activities and expertise in structural mechanics and composite materials in the theoretical field, central to the present project, and the complementary experimental field. The activities are typically characterized by its innovative content and close cooperation with leading wind power companies.

The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students.

However, Ph.D. students in Denmark are supported by grants on a competitive level, being equivalent to a standard salary for an engineer with a similar experience in a normal job The Ph.D. stipend has a fixed duration of 3 years.

Welcome to an international university with high ambitions

As rector of the University of Aarhus, I would like to welcome highly qualified students from all over the world. The University of Aarhus wants to recruit PhD students from among the best students in the world. The university has ambitions of increasing the number of PhD students at our five graduate schools. There are currently approximately 1,000 students enrolled in PhD degrees at the university, and during the course of the next few years, we expect to boost this figure to 2,000 PhD students.

Lauritz B. Holm-NielsenThe University of Aarhus offers attractive four-year PhD scholarships and three-year PhD fellowships. The PhD scholarships are intended for students who have yet to complete a Master’s degree, but who have the ability and ambition to complete a PhD degree within four years. The three-year PhD fellowships are intended for students who have already passed a course of education corresponding to a Master’s degree, and who are thus ready to begin PhD studies.

The university hopes that highly qualified, top-motivated students from all over the world will regard these scholarships as an opportunity for completing an internationally recognised PhD degree programme that will qualify them to play a distinct role in the knowledge society of the future.

Microsoft Research PhD Scholarship Application

Microsoft Research PhD Scholarship Application

Get details on how to apply for a Microsoft Research PhD Scholarship.

The Microsoft Research PhD Scholarship Programme recognises and supports exceptional students who show the potential to make an outstanding contribution to science and computing.

The programme supports PhD students in computing and those working at the intersection of computing and the sciences. Joint applications by two supervisors from different disciplines are encouraged, but not essential.

Important Changes to the Programme

We have changed our selection process. Starting June 2007, our selection is based on the proposed research topic, the research track of the supervisor in the field, and the research environment provided by the host research institution. Supervisors of selected projects will have up to one year from our notification to find the best and most suitable student for the proposed project. We have also extended the list of eligible countries.

Eligibility Criteria

We will usually only consider one application per university department or per laboratory of a national research institution.

Only applications from the following countries will be considered: Albania, Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany (see note below), Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland (see note below), Israel, Italy, Jordan, Latvia, Lebanon, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Malta, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom.

Only applications in one of the following research areas will be considered:

* Computational Biology
* Computational Ecology and Environment Science
* Computer-Mediated Living (including Integrated Systems, Sensors and Devices, and Socio-Digital Systems)
* Constraint Reasoning
* Machine Learning and Perception (including Applied Games, Computer Vision, Information Retrieval, and Machine Learning)
* Natural Computation
* Programming Principles and Tools (including Security)
* Systems and Networking (including Distributed Systems, Networking, and Operating Systems)

Applications may only be submitted through the online application system.

Application Process

Applications will be accepted in English and in electronic form only through the online application system at http://microsoft.redwhale.com/. After you create an application in the online application system, you can modify it at any time before the application deadline.

Applications should contain the following:

* An online Web form that includes contact details of supervisors and possible reviewers
* A project proposal of maximum three (3) A4 pages in 10-point font, including references.

The research project proposal should address the following points:

* Evidence that the applicant would be a suitable supervisor of a PhD student for the proposed research project; this may include a short list of recent and relevant publication of the applicant.
* Evidence that the department or laboratory offers a suitable environment for research in the proposed area.
* Basis for the research (motivations and brief state-of-the-art, including key references).
* Hypothesis under investigation and main aims.
* Research strategy with significant milestones if identified.
* Methods of research (for example, main techniques, experiments, and trials).
* Details of any collaboration with other departments/research bodies.
* Expected outcomes (for example, software tools).

Applications must be received no later than Wednesday, 26 September 2007 midnight (GMT). Applications must be complete and received by the deadline to be considered. Proposals received after this deadline will not be considered.

In Germany, following our recent announcement, PhD scholarships will be offered to some students of the Max Planck Institute for Computer Science only.

Applications for PhD scholarships in a university of the Republic of Ireland should be made through the Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology as a result of an agreement with them.

Selection Process

Applications are on a competitive basis and we anticipate a high level of demand for scholarships. Following receipt of such applications, each will be carefully reviewed by researchers from universities and from Microsoft Research and the best proposals will be selected.

Decisions will be made solely at the discretion of Microsoft Research and all decisions are final.

Awards will be made by Friday 2 December 2007.

Supervisors will then have one year (from the day of notification) to propose the best and most suitable student possible to carry out the proposed research project.

The student, who can be of any nationality, should not have completed more than one year of PhD by the time they are selected by their respective supervisor.

After a student is identified, we will request a CV and two strong letters of recommendation (in English and preferably not from the supervisor) from professors familiar with the student’s work and we may decide to interview the student by phone.

The terms of the agreement between successful applicants and their university with Microsoft Research have been developed over the course of the last few years with input from numerous research organisations around Europe to ensure that they are appropriate and equitable.

Awards

Each Microsoft scholar will be awarded a bursary of up to 33,000 euros per year up to a maximum of three years. The award will be made automatically the following years after the first one, provided the scholar meets the requirements of the university. Payment will be made to the university. The amount of the scholarship is the maximum amount Microsoft Research will pay to the university. For more details, see our terms and conditions. In addition, every scholar will receive a laptop with a selection of software applications.

During the course of their PhD, scholars will be invited to Microsoft Research Cambridge for a summer school that includes a series of talks of academic interest and a poster session, which will give the scholars the opportunity to present their work to Microsoft researchers and a number of Cambridge academics (for example, see the programme of the 2007 Summer School).

Some of the scholars may also be offered in Microsoft Research’s sole discretion an internship in one of the Microsoft Research laboratories. Internships will involve working on a project alongside and as part of a team of Microsoft researchers. Students will be paid during their internship on top of their scholarship bursary.

managerial personnel, labour migration, both documented and undocumented, and
human trafficking all raise theoretical and methodological questions and major
policy issues, as does the role of migration in urban change.

2) The Religion and Globalisation Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Bryan
Turner) explores the changing patterns of religious practice, belief and
identity in recent times, particularly in Southeast Asia, China and South Asia.
The title implies a particular interest in transnational and diasporic
interactions, the engagement with modern technologies and values, and new global
or ‘glocal’ forms of identity.

3) The Cultural Studies Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Chua Beng Huat)
consciously challenges disciplinary boundaries to address new topics, issues and
concerns thrown up by the rapid globalization of contemporary cultures. ARI is
interested in new understandings of the everyday life cultural practices of
contemporary Asia, as in adaptations of older patterns in literature, and the
performing and graphic arts, in rapidly changing contemporary conditions.

4) The Southeast Asia-China Interactions Cluster (Research Leader: Professor
Anthony Reid) will welcome students in two project areas: The Cold War in Asia,
relating particularly to relations between the two Chinas (CCP and KMT) and the
parties, movements and governments of Southeast Asia; and issues of heritage
recovery and archaeology in Aceh and Sumatra more generally.

ARI is a university-level institute formed in July 2001 as one of the strategic
initiatives of the NUS. The mission of the Institute is to produce and promote
world-class research on Asia. ARI engages the social sciences and humanities
broadly defined, and encourages especially multidisciplinary studies. Now home
to six research clusters with a strong team of resident and visiting scholars,
ARI works closely with the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, School of
Business, Faculty of Law, and School of Design and Environment in NUS.

http://www.kas.de/wf/en/10/first.call/-/-/index.html

Scholarships and Cultural Activities The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung awards
scholarships to students and graduates of exceptional academic achievement and
outstanding political or social commitment. German scholars are expected to
endorse Christian Democratic social and political values. Currently we provide
financial support for about 1,800 students. An extensive seminar programme is
part of the numerous activities offered to our scholars.
The scholarships are open to young German students, journalists and graduate
students as well as to young graduate students from abroad who study in Germany.
More than 9.000 alumni worldwide are keeping in touch with each other and with
the Konrad Adenauer Foundation. They are organized in 50 local groups in Germany
and abroad, including Brussels, London, Strasbourg and Switzerland. Foreign
alumni have formed groups in several countries.
We also support writers, artists and musicians. In cooperation with them, we
offer a wide range of exhibitions, readings, symposiums, and workshops. A highly
appreciated literary prize is awarded annually to modern authors.
